The following press release from The Nation newspaper from October 2018 summarizes a major problem faced by the government of Malawi in its quest for development of the oil and gas sector. It is clear that a lack of trained manpower in the sector is crippling efforts to kick-start the industry.
Despite government promising to support the growth of the mining sector to become one of the main foreign exchange earners, the department tasked to look after the oil and gas sector seems to have no capacity and resources to perform, according to a recent report…
The report says technical officers at the Department of Mines do not have continuous trainings to ensure independent and competent analysis when conducting field verification visits where oil and gas companies are operating…
The report has recommended a review of the oil and gas division to allow all technical officers to access relevant training and capacity building programmes (Chirambo, 2018).

Computer science is a major source of technological innovation through the development of new software and computer applications, often leading to entrepreneurial activity. For this reason the Computer Science programme at Unicaf University incorporates modules on management, innovation and entrepreneurship, and an introduction to e-business. Graduates of the programme are therefore in a position to engage with the management and business side of the ICT sector, as well as the technical side of ICT, and have a starting point to launch their own business should they so wish.

The Unicaf University BSc programme in Computer Science consists of 20 modules, each contributing 24 credits to the final qualification. Aim of the programme

The aim of Unicaf University’s Bachelor of Arts programme in Business Administration is to develop the students’ intellectual capacity, executive personality, and managerial skills in a way that enables them to assume entry-level managerial positions in business and industry and other organizations, and to enable them to initiate entrepreneurial business ventures.

The structured online approach provides a unique self-directed learning experience for the student and promotes a practical application of the learning generated through the programme.

The online nature of the programme facilitates the ability of people in full-time employment to access the programme, while remaining accessible to individuals who wish to be full time students.

The programme is an online programme composed of 8 taught modules of 25 credits each, of which five are core modules and three are elective modules relating to a specialist stream, culminating in a research based dissertation of 40 credits. The modules may be taken continuously on a full-time basis or spread over a longer period on a part-time basis, depending on the circumstances and needs of the student. Each taught module lasts for seven weeks and the material is available online 24 hours per day, seven days per week during that period. The student may opt to supplement the online taught modules during this period with face-to-face tutorials in a blended approach. The research is supervised by a PhD-qualified tutor within a structured format over a period of 14 weeks, resulting in a dissertation that is both internally and externally examined.

During the taught modules students interact virtually with their tutor and fellow class students. The number of students taking any one module is limited to 30, thus encouraging personalised interaction and sharing of knowledge and experiences among students from a diverse background.

The module material and e-library access is available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week for the duration of the modules and for the entire period of the dissertation, through a purpose-designed Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). The Unicaf University Malawi PhD in Information Technology is an integrated programme awarded on the basis of a research dissertation (240 credits) and also incorporates a preparatory taught element (120 credits) that provides students with the necessary tools to undertake their research, appreciate current research issues in the field of Information Technology, and assume future leadership roles in their respective institutions. It is the field of focus of the dissertation (67% of total credits), rather than that of the taught modules (33% of total credits) which imparts the name “Information Technology” to the qualification.

The aim of the B.Ed. in Primary Education is to train new teachers to a high standard so that they may in turn teach their pupils to a high standard and positively contribute to their school and communities. The aim is further to train new teachers in such large numbers that they make a significant impact on meeting the targets of access and quality of Primary Education outlined in MIP-1 (National Planning Commission, 2021b) and NESIP (Government of Malawi, 2020).

c) Integrate cybersecurity ethics as a network security practitioner.
d) Design and develop centralized or distributed systems based on required functionality and purpose.
e) Identify and interpret actions taken through the use of computer networks to disrupt, deny, degrade, or destroy information in computers and computer networks, along with identifying actions to protect and respond to unauthorized activity within information systems and computer networks.
f) Implement intelligence collection capabilities conducted through computer networks to gather data from target or adversary automated information systems or networks.
g) Analyse cyber related decisions as they apply to national security strategy from social, ethical, legal, and political viewpoints.
h) Understand common web infrastructure and applications attack vectors and be able to utilize tools and skills in order to attack web infrastructures and applications.
i) Create a solid enterprise-wide information security infrastructure, including analysing the security needs of the enterprise, designing a strategic plan to address the security requirements, selecting the appropriate tools to implement the security organizational policies, and establishing recovery techniques from disruptive and destructive information security events.
j) Design and deploy web database applications using commercially available database systems, and develop advanced queries using various query languages.
